How Do You Self Promote As A Creative?
You would think someone who has made a life in PR would be comfortable promoting their own work? Not so much! Sometimes it’s hardest when it’s closest to home. I’m even like that in my business life. We’ve never pursued accolades, awards, etc. We just love doing the work. We get a kick out of helping brands connect with their key audiences and watching a match turn into something beautiful for both.
Well, if I don’t like to promote my business, imagine how difficult it is to promote something as personal as your art? It’s hard. I don’t think it’s easy for any creator because it can feel cheesy, self-important, and embarrassing. But the truth is, if you’re going to get your work out there, if that’s important to you, then you’re going to have to promote it. I remember someone saying to me years ago, “isn’t writing just for yourself satisfying?” Heck no. I’m writing to hopefully bring enjoyment to others, so I want it out there, published. Yes, there are some artists that create mainly for themselves and people closest to them, but most creators want to share what they make. And that’s going to require that they put it out there.
Here's the number one thing I’ve learned that has helped me: It’s not about me. It’s really about the work.
True. If I can distance myself by seeing the work almost as a sentient being, it is easier for me to promote it.
The second thing that helps me is having a sense of humor about the whole thing. If I’m going to be able to put my work out there, I’m going to have to be able to laugh a little about the process. It’s the one thing that can take the edge off and free me up to keep moving.
And third, I make sure to include people in my journey of creativity and discovery so there is value in my community for all of us. Don’t see promotion as a means to an end, see it as an important part of the journey!
