Learn From Others
Friends, one word of advice as you get ready to try something new: park that ego at the curb!
Whatever wonderful things you have planned, however cool and unique you think you are (and you most surely are!) there is always someone you can learn from.
I’ve got another video coming up on asking people for help – and I’m a big advocate of that, but this is different. This isn’t asking for a leg up, but rather asking someone for their advice and key learnings. Kind of like what I’m doing here. Hopefully sharing some useful ideas and advice that can help you move forward in your desires.
There is something we say in marketing – OPM. This stands for Other People’s Money. If you can use other people’s money (in my world, another brand’s money) to forward your cause, generally because you have mutually beneficial offerings, all the better than using your own! ;-)
As you are starting something new if you can use other’s people’s hard-won experiences to help you and – hopefully – bypass frequently made mistakes, or great shortcuts, you should.
And people, like me, love to share stories from the trenches.
I just had a chat with a friend who runs a business in the beauty sector. He had a business partner and things didn’t work out. I asked him what the biggest lesson was that he learned. Guess what? It was all around taking other people’s advice. He shared that if he had taken his lawyer’s advice around setting up the partnership, he would have saved a lot of money – and headaches.
Like my friend, did you ever get advice that you wished you had taken? What happened? Maybe we can learn from you! Please share!
