How to set BIG goals
I’m a big proponent of looking way out into the margins to determine where I want to go and what I want to do. So, my goals can be quite large.
My husband (who is my hero) recently said his life has exceeded his expectations in so many ways. My dreams as a child were ginormous, so while my life is awesome and I am seriously thankful for all that it has yielded so far, there is oh so much more that I’d like to do.
With that in mind, I sometimes set large goals with an idea that they will shift and change as I test and learn. So, if I want to start a new company – and I do! I need to consider the exit strategy and work my goals around that. If everything goes the way I’d like it to go, where would I like to be when it’s flying?
Goals often come with people attached, so I need to consider how my goals will affect my family, or employees. Sometimes these outside factors make me change my goals because the net result of me making my goal might not reflect well on my relationships.
To set good goals you need to be flexible, because you don’t know where life will take you. Goals are awesome and we all need them, but we need to hold them lightly or we’ll not only be disappointed, we’ll also not be flexible enough to pivot to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. And they do, just when you least expect it!
