Hold That Tongue.

So, here’s a little truth about me, and it’s not something I’m always proud of. I have a problem with trust. I could try to unravel why, but no need to travel down a rabbit hole. Truth is, I can be a bit suspicious by nature. So, when an employee tells me their computer crashed, or they emailed something that I never got I often think: Hmmm. Truth or fiction? It’s not on them, it’s on me. I work with some of the brightest, most wonderful women. This is my issue. But I bet you too have been in a situation like this, no?

So, recently I was working on a project with one of my associates. She was managing a meeting (she’s a Rockstar), and I couldn’t be there but had a whole list of things I wanted her to cover off. She asked if we could have a chat, so I wrote out all the things I wanted to have her handle in the meeting and asked if she had time now to connect. We’re working on different time zones. I waited for her to reply. Crickets. I had a bit of time to burn, but not much, so I wanted to have this convo and move on with my morning. I pinged again, and again.

Ok, now I’m getting mad, right? Normal. I kept my cool, I knew this wasn’t going to kill the meeting and assumed she must be busy. When we did connect, she was as cheery as ever and within five minutes we had the call stuff sorted.

About 30 minutes later guess what I got? A text from someone else who said she thought I might have sent a text to her by mistake. Yep. I did. And I was thankful that I managed my irritation. What a lesson.

Keeping your cool isn’t always easy, but sure makes for more productive outcomes.
